Top 10 Ubuntu applications

1. VLC media player – plays all media file types, with it’s own codecs (no need of additional codecs)

Open a terminal window and type in:
sudo apt-get install vlc

2. Amarok – music player with last.fm plugin and other cool stuff.

To install, open a terminal window and type:

sudo apt-get install amarok

3. Firefox – of course, the well known web browser.

sudo apt-get install firefox

And an optimized version for Linux: here.

4. Avant Window Navigator – Changes the look of your panels.

 sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator

5. Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) - Some sort of emulator (but not an emulator :P ), of Windows, for Linux. It lets you install Windows software on Ubuntu.

sudo apt-get install wine

6. K3b – CD/DVD Kreator for Linux – optimized for KDE.

Installation: sudo apt-get install k3b

7. Gmount-iso – Well… as the name says it, it mounts iso files.

To install, open a terminal window and type:

sudo apt-get install gmountiso

8. Deluge – The best torrent client i ever tried :D

sudo apt-get install deluge-torrent

9. Google Gadgets – Now available on Ubuntu too.

Download from here.

10. Brightside – lets you “edge flip”, so you can switch to the next virtual desktop by moving your mouse to the edge of the screen. You can customize it, giving each corner of your screen a different action.

To install: sudo apt-get install brightside

Note: to be able to install, you need to make sure that you have a “universe” and “multiuniverse” mirror in your /etc/apt/sources.list (after that, to install most software you just need to type in the command).

    si tu ai dreptate, Ubuntu e mistoc.
    2. pe cand un top10 Symbian OS 9.1 UIQ3? da, mi-am luat jucarie… :P

    Cred ca trebuia sa urci compizul in top. Si sa nu incluzi Gmount-Iso… nimeni nu il folosesti… toata lumea face mount din comanda :)

    eh, sunt aplicatii pentru incepatori. si pentru a convinge lumea sa foloseasca Ubuntu :D

    I would avoid Automatix. For me, too many stuffed up installs in the past. Just add the medibuntu repo and use Synaptic.

    I would like to recommend Ubuntu Tweak: http://ubuntu-tweak.com/

    Ive use it and it works flawless, bugless so far, it brings interesting tweaks, there is a option to do what number 10 application ” Brightside” does, only you can have a different option in every corner
