Linux (but this article is optimized for Ubuntu :P) top video capture/editing software

1. gtk-recordmydesktop – of course we all know it, the best screen capture software:

sudo apt-get install gtk-recordmydesktop

2. XVidCap Screen Capture – second best screen capture software:

sudo apt-get install xvidcap

3. Avidemux – my favourite video editing tool (the easiest one to use):

sudo apt-get install avidemux

4. Cinelerra – Probably the best video editing software for linux, but harder to use than Avidemux:

- To add this repository in your sources list use the following terminal command:
sudo wget http://repository.akirad.net/dists/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/akirad.list
- Installations from this repository need an authentication key. Add it by typing in your terminal the following command:
wget -q http://repository.akirad.net/dists/akirad.key -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update
- Cinelerra package is available in 5 variants:

cinelerra (x86 and x86_64 without opengl 2.0 video card)
cinelerra-generic (all x86 and x86_64 with opengl 2.0 video card)
cinelerra-k7 (amd32 without opengl 2.0 video card)
cinelerra-k7gl (amd32 with opengl 2.0 video card)
cinelerra-k8 (amd k8 optimized with opengl 2.0 video card)

- Cinelerra must be set to work with PulseAudio. Open Cinelerra and go to Settings->Preferences->Playback->Audio Driver. Select ESound and set the following parameters:
Server:
Port: 7007
- These packages set shmmax to 0x7fffffff and add non-English language support for Cinelerra.

5. WinFF – Easy conversion of video files using ffmpeg but with GUI.

Open System->Administration->Software Sources. Select the Third-Party Software tab and click Add. When you are prompted to enter the APT line, paste this text:
deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ hardy free

Then paste this in a terminal window: sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring

Then you can download WinFF from here.

6. PyTube – Apply audio into video, merge, rotate, resize videos, make ringtones, download youtube videos and local multimedia encoding.

Open System->Administration->Software Sources. Select the Third-Party Software tab and click Add. When you are prompted to enter the APT line, paste this text: deb http://www.bashterritory.com/pytube/releases /

Then open a terminal window and type: sudo apt-get install ffmpeg mencoder pytube

7. AcetoneISO2 – GUI to download videos from Youtube, convert flv to avi and many other video conversions, rip DVDs to xvid AVIs, back up audio CD to .bin image, generate ISO from a folder/DVD/CD, extract images from *.bin *.mdf *.nrg *.img *.daa *.dmg *.cdi *.b5i *.bwi *.pdi to a folder, mount all kind of CD/DVD image files and much more.

To install, open a terminal and paste this: sudo apt-get install libksba8 libenca0 libtwolame0 fuseiso p7zip-full gnupg-agent gnupg2 pinentry-qt mencode

Then in a terminal: wget http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/acetoneiso2/acetoneiso2_20080508-1_i386.deb ; sudo dpkg -i acetoneiso2_20080508-1_i386.deb
