Export your Firefox 3.0 full profile to Firefox 3.1 (including all addons, themes, cookies, passwords, etc)
This article explains how to move a full profile (addons, themes, cookies, browsing history, passwords and so on) from Firefox 3.0.x to Firefox 3.1.x beta or any other version, but it also works for synchronizing Firefox on 2 different computers or backing up a full profile of Firefox.
For Windows, MAC and Linux (taz.bz2), download Firefox 3.1 beta X from here.
If you use Ubuntu, use these instructions to install Firefox 3.1 beta X from the repositories (the latest version is 3.1 beta 3pre).
(’X’ because of course new versions are released all the time and by the time you read this, a new version of FF 3.1 may be available)
To export all your Firefox addons, passwords, bookmarks, cookies, websites, themes and so on, you’ll be needing this addon: FEBE which you have to install on Firefox 3.0.x, then use it to backup a full profile or whatever you want to export to Firefox 3.1.x (i have chosen a full profile):
After you install Firefox 3.1.x into a new folder (different than FF 3.0.x), you need to make a new profile to be able to restore the settings to the default profile of Firefox 3.1.x.
So if you are using Linux, press Alt + F2 and type:
Firefox3-1 -profilemanager
if you are using Windows, simply go to the FF 3.1.x shortcut in the start menu, right click it, select properties and in the target field, enter ‘-profilemanager’ at the end, should be something like this:
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -profilemanager
More info on how to open FF profile manager.
Enter a new profile say ‘new’ and open Firefox:
and install this addon: Nightly Tester Tools and after you restart Firefox, install also FEBE on this new version of FF too (use Nightly Tester Tools to make any addon compatible so make FEBE compatible by clicking “override all compatibility” button which you can find in the bottom right corner of the addons dialog):
Then, in the FEBE menu, click Restore > Restore Profile and select the FEBE profile you want to restore, and in the profile of Firefox 3.1 you want to restore, select ‘default’ (you won’t be able to select another one anyway):
Restart Firefox 3.1 and using profile manager again, revert to the default profile and open Firefox. Skip the update check for the addons. You’ll probably notice that all your addons are disabled. No need to worry, install Nightly Tester Tools again as described above and ‘override all compatibility’ for your addons and themes, and everything will work just fine. All of my addons worked with the new Firefox 3.1 beta 3 pre under Ubuntu, just one had some weird behaviour: Tab Mix Plus, but i found an update to make it work, which you can get from here.
