Firefox 4 Ubuntu PPA (Install Firefox In Ubuntu 10.10)
Firefox 4 will be released tomorrow and I’m sure a lot of new Ubuntu users will read some articles on various blogs about installing the latest Firefox 4.0 via the Ubuntu Mozilla Daily PPA. But that PPA never provides stable releases so they might end up with the next pre-alpha version of Firefox (Firefox 4.1 or whatever) the very next day instead of Firefox 4.0. So here’s the proper way of installing Firefox 4 in Ubuntu via PPA repository.
Further more, the Mozilla Daily Ubuntu PPA provides other highly unstable packages such as Thunderbird, etc. so it’s best to avoid it.
Firefox 4 Ubuntu PPA
The best is to use the Firefox stable Ubuntu PPA: https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/firefox-stable. Add the PPA and install Firefox 4 in Ubuntu (10.10 and 10.04) using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox ubufox
Make sure you remove any “firefox-4.0″ package you may have installed from some other PPA.
Also, in the future when you’ll want to install some alpha/beta/rc Firefox, I suggest you use the Firefox-Next PPA: https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/firefox-next which provides Firefox milestones – this PPA currently provides Firefox 4 RC1 at the time I’m writing this post.
